Frank Edwards – Profile

Frank Edwards: Biography of the Nigerian Gospel Singer
Frank Ugochukwu Edwards, popularly known as Frank Edwards, is a Nigerian gospel singer, songwriter, music producer, instrumentalist and sound engineer from Enugu State, Nigeria. He is known for combining contemporary gospel, worship, rock and other modern musical influences while maintaining a distinctly Christian message. He is also the founder of Rocktown Records, a record label associated with a number of gospel and Christian music artists.
Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Frank Edwards was born in Enugu, Nigeria, and grew up in the Anglican Church. The Anglican Diocese of Enugu identifies him by his full name, Frank Ugochukwu Edwards, and records that he was baptised at St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church, Asata, Enugu. The Diocese also states that his musical gift became evident from a very young age.
In a 2026 interview with The Guardian, Edwards explained that his first serious encounter with music came when he began playing the piano at about seven years old. He joined the Anglican Youth Fellowship band in Enugu, although his young age initially prevented him from being accepted as a regular keyboard player. On one occasion, when the band’s keyboardist was absent, the young Edwards climbed onto stacked chairs and began playing along with the band. His performance convinced the members that he was capable of playing.
He subsequently played with the church band during his early teenage years. According to his account, he later moved to Lagos and became involved in the music ministry of his uncle’s church before joining Christ Embassy, where he began working closely with gospel singer Sinach. Following her to different studios gave him practical exposure to music production and helped develop the production side of his career.
Edwards has also explained that he was largely self-taught as a multi-instrumentalist. He later studied sound engineering after deciding that music would become his profession.
From Instrumentalist to Gospel Recording Artist
Although music was already an important part of his life, becoming a professional musician was not initially his plan. Edwards has said that he once wanted to become a pilot. In a 2020 interview with Punch, he explained that his father initially preferred music to remain a hobby rather than a career, although his mother was more supportive of his musical direction.
His professional recording career became prominent in the late 2000s. His debut album, The Definition, was released in 2008. Contemporary profiles describe the album as a 14-track project. It was followed by Angels on the Runway in 2010 and Unlimited in 2011. Tagjam was also released in 2011.
These early projects established Edwards as one of the emerging voices in Nigeria’s contemporary gospel scene.
His Musical Style
One of the distinctive features of Frank Edwards’ career has been his willingness to combine gospel lyrics and worship with contemporary musical sounds.
In his 2026 interview with The Guardian, Edwards explained that he wanted to create a contemporary sound that could appeal to younger listeners while remaining firmly within gospel music. He described experimenting with modern sounds, contemporary rock and combinations of rock and pop. Songs such as “You Too Dey Bless Me” and “Oghene Doh” became examples of this approach.
This approach also attracted criticism from some listeners who felt that gospel music should retain a more traditional sound. Edwards nevertheless continued developing the style, and contemporary gospel production became an important part of his musical identity.
As well as performing, he has developed a reputation as a producer and sound engineer. His experience in the studio, particularly through his early work with other gospel musicians, became an important part of his career.

Rocktown Records
Frank Edwards is the founder of Rocktown Records, through which he has supported and developed other Christian music talents. Profiles of the label have associated it with artists including Gil Joe, King BAS, Nkay, Divine and others.
His work as a producer and label founder has therefore extended his influence beyond his own recordings. He has participated in developing other musicians and has also collaborated with younger musicians and music students.
In July 2023, for example, Edwards participated in the graduation activities of the MTNF-MUSON School of Music, where he presented awards to outstanding graduates and performed with the graduating class. He also spoke about working with MUSON alumni to showcase young Nigerian musical talent.
Major Collaborations
Over the course of his career, Frank Edwards has worked with a number of Nigerian and international gospel musicians.
Among the notable artists with whom he has collaborated are Sinach, Don Moen, Nathaniel Bassey and Micah Stampley. The Guardian identifies these collaborations as part of his development as a gospel recording and performing artist.
His collaboration with American gospel musician Don Moen is particularly notable. Edwards and Moen recorded “Eze Ndi Eze,” which appeared on Moen’s Grace project. The official Don Moen YouTube channel identifies the recording as a collaboration between Don Moen and Frank Edwards.
Edwards has also worked with Sinach, including an appearance in the live performance of her song “I Know Who I Am.”
Awards and Recognition
Frank Edwards began receiving significant recognition during the early years of his recording career.
Among the documented honours associated with his career are awards and recognitions from the LoveWorld Awards, Nigeria Gospel Music Awards, and African Gospel Music Awards.
In 2012, he received recognition including West Africa Best Male Vocalist and Best Hit Single at the LoveWorld Awards. Contemporary reporting also records three Nigeria Gospel Music Awards associated with him: Male Artiste of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Male Vocal.
In 2013, Edwards won the Best Male Gospel Artiste in Africa award at the African Gospel Music Awards in London. Contemporary reports from the event confirm the award.
These recognitions helped establish him as one of the prominent Nigerian gospel recording artists of his generation.
Faith and Ministry
Christian faith is central to Edwards’ public identity and musical work. His musical beginnings were rooted in the Anglican Church, and his subsequent career included extensive involvement in the music ministry of Christ Embassy/LoveWorld.
In 2025, during a homecoming visit to the Anglican Diocese of Enugu, Edwards reflected on his upbringing in the Anglican Youth Fellowship and described grace, discipline, service and character as important elements in his journey. The Diocese reported that he viewed service as a significant part of how he had progressed in his career.
His music has consequently remained strongly centred on Christian worship, praise, faith and devotion.
Recent Work
Frank Edwards has continued recording and releasing music well into the 2020s.
His recent catalogue includes projects and singles released after his earlier albums, demonstrating his continued activity as a recording artist and producer. In April 2026, he released Heart of Worship, a seven-track project. Apple Music records the release date as 24 April 2026 and credits the project to Rocktown Records/ONErpm.
The project features collaborations with Prinx Emmanuel, LMGC, Micah Stampley and Mayo. Its seven tracks include “Obuka (Mighty),” “Biggest Name (Man of Galilee),” “Song from My Heart,” “Perfect Sacrifice,” “Obuka,” “Listen” and “Heart of Worship.”
In a 2026 interview with The Guardian, Edwards described the project as reflecting a more intimate understanding of worship. He explained that, after years of performing and producing music, he had increasingly come to view worship not merely as singing but as a lifestyle centred on God.
Legacy and Continuing Influence
Frank Edwards’ career represents a combination of performing, songwriting, music production, sound engineering, church ministry and artist development.
From learning the piano as a child in Enugu, he progressed through church music ministry and studio work into a professional recording career. His early albums established him in Nigeria’s gospel music scene, while his subsequent work as a producer and the founder of Rocktown Records expanded his contribution beyond his own performances.
His collaborations with artists such as Don Moen, Sinach, Nathaniel Bassey and Micah Stampley have also connected his music to a broader international gospel audience.
Today, Frank Edwards remains active as a Nigerian gospel recording artist, producer and music minister, continuing to release music and participate in projects aimed at worship, Christian ministry and the development of musical talent.
